According to the Center for Community Solutions, self-care became a buzzword in the 1950s. In our context, self-care will begin with allocating time, thought, and resources to our personal health and values. We allocate a comfortable amount of time to avoid that feeling of guilt: "I should be doing something else!". This comfortable allotment of time will vary from individual to individual. There is an essential distinction between yoga therapy and other healing modalities. Yoga therapy teaches from the perspective that we are not our diagnosis. Yoga therapy focuses on symptoms in a bottom-up approach versus the top-down approach of cognitive counseling. Both yoga therapy and HeartMath techniques are complementary, but they are taught in different formats. Each modality teaches awareness in its unique way, targeting the state of mind, body, breath, personality, and emotions to create resilience, balance, and self-regulation. We are offering group classes in both formats.
Biofeedback is an option for heart rhythm coherence on an individual basis. Time restraints of group classes reduce the availability of biofeedback,
For those so inclined, journaling is recommended to track practice progress, identify which techniques are easier or more difficult than others, and self-reflect on any other aspects of the training; the journals are personal and will not be collected or shared.
